Welcome to TNRPG, aka The New Role-Playing Guild! We’re a tiny community of Role-players, DND-ers, and Storytellers but above all, friends. We don’t have a whole lot of rules around here, but there are some basic things that everyone should know before getting into the thick of things! This thread will provide not only the basic groundwork rules but also a guide on how to properly integrate yourself into the Roleplay and get the imagination train rolling! First, the basic rules for our site and character creation.
1. Firstly, you should create your character in the Character Bio Thread before roleplaying! Remember to read and follow the general guidelines of character creation before posting, and keep your characters in your own thread.
2. You may not use characters taken from books, movies, TV shows, etc. you must make up your own original character, and unless you would be able to integrate it into this world properly (Please speak to a Moderator about that), this goes for characters created in/for a certain fandom universe as well. We encourage originality here!
3. This group is all about freedom of writing, expression and exploring the mythical and imaginative side. Anyone and everyone are free to contribute to our world, but before you do, please make sure to read the guidelines of whatever thread you’re posting in, and before you officialize anything, run it by a Moderator, or just post it in the General Chat and get multiple opinions! We built all this together, through hard work and fair criticism and have built and rebuilt much of what we have here as a unit, so don’t go solo commando on us with your ideas!
4. DONT ASSUME! If you're unsure about something lore-wise, someone's power or ANYTHING at all, please don’t be afraid to ask! If you don't want other people trying to help explain or getting in the conversation, ask in a PM. Even if you think you are sure about how something works that is not yours, ASK, just to make sure! We are all friends here to encourage one another, no-one will put you down for not understanding!
5. If you’re considering creating your own race, awesome! However, please check the rules and guidelines for the Thread before posting, and do not use races from books, movies, TV shows, etc., be original. This does not apply towards generic fantasy races such as Elves, Dragons, Fairies, etc.. For a list of the pre-approved generic races look Here.
ROLE-PLAY ETIQUETTE
While the above are more general rules of creation, the next section focuses more on the Role-Play aspect of our group, the breadand butter! This is a guide meant to help people who have a hard time understanding what the Role-Play is and how it works, and the specific ins and outs of the Role-Play etiquette, beginning with how basic interactions play out within RP.
2. In the real world, people speak like…well, people. It is a somewhat realistic world we are attempting to portray, so please do not use chat emotes ( :D, :3, o.o, XD) or “chtspk lol ikr” in Role-play. This is not saying you cannot portray accents through the spelling of certain words, though!
3. When stating actions that your character does, in order to separate these from lines said by characters, use asterisks around the action such as *Smiles* or *Whacks you across the head*. Hyphens can also be used for actions, such as -Giggles- or -Rolls around on the floor-. With Discord, actions in two asterisks **like this** will be bolded, while actions in one *like this* will be put in italics. Either is fine.
4. Try to keep to your character names in the RP chat to keep from confusion. If you're using more than one character at a time, put their name like this: "Charactername: Hello!”
5. Try to every now and then backlog the RP chat a little bit, so you're not lost on what's happening when you want to hop in. Or, if a lot has gone on since you’ve been gone, ask for a short recap.
6. If you are going AFK it is appreciated if you let those you’re playing with know you must go. If you find yourself leaving for a little while, please be considerate and try to have your character leave, take a backseat in the current RP, or whatever you can think of that will allow others to continue without the awkward transition or getting stuck, though naturally, we understand that things come up.
7. Understand that this is a collaborative story-telling effort. Your plans can and will go wrong, and a player can interfere with your plans if they are in the area or it is within reason to do so. Not everything will go perfectly; the whole purpose of TNRPG is to create stories on the fly with one another, to adapt and bend to the reactions of characters in the world. If you want to roleplay by yourself..We recommend writing a book instead.
1. In or out of fighting sequences, you typically want to be specific with your actions. if you’re dodging, explain how you did it. Did you flip? Duck? If you’re blocking, explain what you blocked with. Did you block with your arms? sword? shield? and if you went somewhere, explain how! did you fly? glide? skate? explain--the more detail the better.
2. Play by your character's limitations and stats. A person cannot go on forever; take a few blows every now and then, start to tire, treat them as a real person fighting, taking their advantages as well as their flaws into consideration, instead of being an unstoppable machine, and understand that other characters also have their own strengths and weaknesses. It’s a trust system, yes, so please be honest and play by this rule!
3. Please, no God-modding. With the rules and guidelines we’ve provided, we urge people to make reasonable characters built with their own strengths and weaknesses, to make play of any kind fun for everyone. To use a modification on yourself to make yourself unstoppable, as if you couldn't be able to be hit by anything or hurt by anything, to be able to kill any character in one hit, or to declare what other characters other than your own have done are all forms of godmoding. Other forms include omnipresence, knowing things your character should not (aka OOC bleed) and metagaming. Plus, it's just no fun! Powers that are considered OP should be changed before playing or revised if they are decidedly OP after you join, and if you speak with a Moderator or any other good ol’ Guildie, they would be more than happy to work on that power with you to make something more manageable and fun for you to use. Additionally, powers that are considered OP are not “checked” by any of the following things:
--"x is restricted by their personality"
--"x will only use x ability in x situation"
--"x does not know x has x power yet" OR "x does not have perfect control over x power" (this goes the same for not knowing their full potential.)
--"x has only used it once and will never use it again"
--"x can only use x ability when in x state and it's really difficult to achieve"
--"x can only use x ability once every x amount of hours/days." (Months and years may pass this rule, depends upon the power.)
Typically when creating a power or character, even if you think it’s not OP, just run it by a more experienced player or a Moderator who can give you some pointers or general help.
This is as far as it goes in terms of guidelines and simple rulesets and ettiquite for Roleplay. If you have any further questions, please don't be afraid to reach out to any moderator or role-player for help.
