Aberrant Human: Savant
Distinguishing features:
Savants are typical humans with aberrations in their mana flow that restricts them to using a specific type of magic that is passed down through genetics. The benefit of being a Savant is having a deep well of mana that is hard to replicate in others; however, unlike traditional casters that can learn to apply their magic in many ways, a Savant instead becomes limited to a single school of magic that is passed down through their family line. Savant Casters are typically well-known families that are distinguished for their magic.
Religious views:
Savants are generally family oriented and any religious affiliation is likely to be passed down alongside their Savant magic, though as always, there are exceptions. Individual Savant families differ as much as non-Savant families in their religious affiliation and there is no overarching Savant religion.
Culture:
Savants are regular human beings in most cases, with a family based magic lineage that is uniquely honed in their family line. Savants come from all countries, nationalities, and regions but are bound together by the unique way their mana is attuned to their Savant magic. A Savant struggles to learn spells like a normal Mage, and instead is naturally gifted in the use of their Savant Style and rarely can use their mana outside of that style of casting.
Savant Styles:
Below are examples of Savant families across the land whose magic has been passed down through the generations. These are merely examples from my character list, as the limits of Savants essentially do not exist.
Elys Family (Chain Savant):
The Elys Family is known for their ability to conjure chains out of thin air and use them in conjunction with other weapons to create a brutal fighting style that locks down movement and bears in on a restricted foe. Skilled Chain Savants even go on to realize a unique style of chain that is specific to them. For example, Colt’s Golden Chains are more durable and emanate a “holy” aura that unholy creatures dislike.
Naeyun Family (Rune Savant):
The Naeyun Family has watched over Carrhilon for generations and served as its primary police force. The leaders of this family are gifted with Rune Savant magic that allows them to write arcane runes in the air to create various effects. From elemental bursts to complicated “Law Runes” that manipulate the battlefield. The effects of the runes are based on how many are stringed together and the specific runes used in a string. Unlike most Savant styles, Rune Savants can be just as versatile as a traditional caster, which affords them their position in Carrhilon’s police force.
Naeth Family (Pact Savant):
An oddity in the world, the Naeth Family practices the lost tradition of monster hunting using their signature Pact Savant Style. Individuals in the Naeth family are cursed with the inability to use their massive mana pool; however, they are blessed with the ability to contact and form Pacts with higher beings that can then channel their magic using the Naeth’s mana pool. The Naeth family is hierarchical with a primary family line and a secondary line. The Primary line is afforded the luxury of forming Pacts with the Celestial Spirits, while the Secondary Line can only form Pacts with earthly spirits.
Alberona Family (Fortune Savant):
The Alberona Family is well known for their accurate fortune telling magic that, at first glance, doesn’t seem like Savant Magic. Each member creates their own way to read fortunes, but every member’s magic taps into the power of Yggdrasil to call upon higher knowledge in their craft.
They contact the "Fates" in Yggdrasil to complete their fortune telling rituals.
